A recent study in Israel found that women suffering from morning sickness could safely consume a particular anti-nausea drug, metoclopramide without harming their unborn child. The drug was tested during a large study. According to experts, the result of the study has the potential to greatly impact how doctors take care of morning sickness because now, mothers have safe pharmaceutical option.

At this time, there is no morning sickness drug approved for consumption in the United States. Statistically, most women suffer from morning sickness during the first trimester of pregnancy. Some are subjected to morning sickness considerably longer and a small percentage is sick during the entire pregnancy. In the past, physicians have utilized strategies including eating small meals on a frequent basis or eating crackers to ward off nausea.

In Israel, the study examined approximately 82,000 births in which metoclopramide was used. The research indicates that there is no difference regarding natal problems and birth defects between women who did or did not take the drug.

According to New York’s Mount Sinai M.C. obstetrics director, Dr. Keith Eddleman, said, the study’s findings are “comforting.” Eddleman went on to say that many mothers are unwilling simply based on stories they have heard and the idea that they might cause injury to the baby.

The complete results were recently printed in the New England Journal of Medicine. While its findings are encouraging, it is important to note that the study did not consider the effectiveness of the drug itself.

For many, morning sickness is less than a nuisance, but for others, it can make the pregnancy extremely difficult. Some expecting mothers have experienced severe weight loss during pregnancy. Regardless, mothers and doctors alike have been reluctant to utilize drugs to combat the illness because of the possibility of complications in the pregnancy or fetus.

For example, in the 1960’s both Canada and Europe utilized a drug called Thalidomide that was later found to produce newborns with shortened or missing limbs. In the 1980’s another company released Bendectin that many claimed also caused deformities in the limbs. Studies of the drug never actually linked the drug to the deformities. But still, the idea of harming the fetus lingers in the minds of mothers and their doctors.

Studying the use of anti-nausea medication in pregnant women is considered controversial considering the possibility of accidentally harming the fetuses involved in the study.

The idea of physicians screening for inherited diseases in fetuses has long been an interesting subject. Soon, however, doctors may be able to do just that. Until recently, it was impossible to screen fetuses for disorders such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, and cystic fibrosis via a maternal blood test. Instead, mothers were subjected to amniocentesis, where a physician extracts a tiny amount of amniotic fluid from the sac containing the growing fetus. This procedure is risky and is known to cause miscarriage.

Researchers in Thailand and Hong Kong now say they have discovered a method in which to diagnose inherited “monogenic” diseases with a simple blood test. The monogenic diseases are sparked by a single inaccuracy in one gene of the DNA.
“Such diseases can be diagnosed by a simple blood test ... and by counting the relative ratio of the mutant genes against the normal genes,” Dennis Lo, researcher leader at Hong Kong’s Chinese University, said. The blood test, Lo said, is taken from the mother and bares no risk to the fetus.

According to Lo, the maternal blood test is possible because the DNA of the fetus circulates in the mother’s blood. Lo and some fellow researchers discovered this known fact many years ago.
Several researchers have since attempted to determine the best method to make a distinction between maternal DNA and fetal DNA, before it is possible to identify anomalies found in the DNA from the fetus. These efforts, however, have been unsuccessful for the most part.

In a recent article found in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Lo and his researchers claimed they designed a counting structure that may possibly bring non-invasive prenatal analysis of monogenic disorders into the realm of reality.
Using exceedingly exact digital testing equipment, both normal and mutant DNA sequences are reviewed in maternal blood. The blood count is then utilized to determine the amount of distorted genes inherited by the unborn child and to decide the likelihood of the baby developing a monogenic disorder.

Lo, did note the accurateness of his technique depends on the amount of DNA from the fetus present in the maternal blood during testing.

If identified at its earliest stage, physicians have a better chance of treating the monogenic disease and gaining the best results. For example, thalassaemia is known to cause a reduction in fertility or, in some cases, infertility. However, when treated early, the quality of the patient’s life is greatly improved.

As the delivery date looms near, most expectant mothers as well as fathers experience growing anxiety. However, like everything else, ignorance also breeds fear. So it is best to know and be prepared on what to expect during labor and delivery to ensure safe and comfortable experience for parents.

So what should you expect on the day? While labor pains may greatly differ from one woman to another, you will know you are in labor when you feel regular and frequent contractions. These contractions cause the cervix to open and shorten in the body’s preparation for delivery.

Call your doctor when:
•	Your water bag breaks, most especially if the fluid is greenish brown or stained dark
•	In cases of vaginal bleeding
•	When contractions is 5 to 10 minutes apart
•	When you cannot walk during contractions
•	If you have concerns about your personal well-being and that of the baby

Hospital Arrival

Upon arrival to the hospital, you or your husband will be asked to fill out hospital admission paperwork. This will include insurance information, although this can be done in advance through your doctor. You will be led to the delivery room and be asked to change into a hospital gown to prepare for the examination to see how dilated the cervix is.

Labor Stages

Stage 1 - Contractions
•	Dilated and open cervix up to 10 centimeters
•	Regular contractions

Stage 2 – Pushing and Delivery
•	The average length of this stage is one to two house
•	Cervix is fully open to make way for the baby

Stage 3 – Delivery of the Placenta
•	After the birth of the baby, the placenta follows

Coping with Labor Pains

The intensity and difficulty of labor differ among women, and is greatly dependent on the size and position of the baby. Most women are able to manage the contraction pains through breathing techniques that are usually taught during childbirth classes. However, there are actually a number of ways to make labor as comfortable as possible. This includes the following:

•	Relaxation techniques
•	Breathing exercises
•	Pain-relieving drugs

It is important for parents to learn the possible options available at the birthing center or hospital. It is equally important to go over and discuss in detail these options as well as personal preferences with your healthcare provider before the delivery period. This will help you gain better perspective on what’s to come as well as what to expect.

Most medical experts advise that it is best to remain flexible as the labor progresses as it may take an unexpected turn, which may require you a change of plan. So be sure to explore the possibilities and make all the necessary preparations.

Back pain and pregnancy unfortunately seem to go hand in hand for a majority of pregnant women. While it can vary in it's intensity, most will find it uncomfortable enough to wonder what can be done to prevent it. Fortunately, there are quite a few things that can help you get a healthier back. You will find some tips to prevent back pain below.

Back pain and pregnancy can be positively impacted by adjusting your posture. Even normally, incorrect posture can create problems, but these are magnified when you are pregnant. As your belly grows, it pulls your center of gravity forward, and your lower back attempts to compensate by arching more and more. This places pressure on the vertebrae and discs of your lower spine, and causes pain. You can improve your posture simply by being mindful of it while walking, and making sure your lower back is supported while seated, and your feet are flat on the floor. Try to avoid standing for long periods, but if you must, try to rest one foot up on a box or stool to take the strain off of your lower pelvis.

Adjusting your sleeping position can also help alleviate back pain. Be sure to sleep on your side, with your knees drawn up a bit. Place a pillow between them to reduce pressure on the back. If you can, try to get a medium-firm mattress that provides support without changing the natural curve of your body.

Other tips to prevent back pain involve exercise. Your back usually hurts because your core muscles meant to support it are too weak. If you strengthen them, you can greatly reduce incidences of pain. Exercises like squats and rows help strengthen key lower back and abdominal muscles, taking pressure off of your spine. You don't need to do a lot just a few done consistently will bring results.

Useful tips to prevent back discomforts include making changes to your bending and lifting techniques. When bending over, always keep your back straight, and bend your knees instead. When lifting, make sure your legs are doing all the work, and keep any objects you are lifting as close to your body as possible. If anything seems too heavy, don't hesitate to ask for help.

Back pain and pregnancy can occur for other reasons as well. Sometimes the shoes you wear are not optimal for supporting your weight properly. Try using heel inserts to take pressure off of your back and absorb shock. Also try to avoid wearing high heels while pregnant. You can also make sure you are seated correctly while driving. Make sure your knees are higher than your hips, and that your elbows are comfortably bent while holding the wheel.

While back pain and pregnancy often seem to go together, the back pain is not inevitable. If you follow the tips to prevent back pain listed above, chances are you may not experience it at all, and if you do, it will be fairly minor.

By Iris Parish

There are many things you must keep in mind when attempting to schedule a pregnancy photography session. This is a very exciting time within a mother's life and the need to document such an event should be very monumental. To ensure that this event goes smoothly most maternity photographers recommend that you schedule your pregnancy photography shoot between thirty-one and thirty-six weeks if possible. The reasoning for this is before thirty-one weeks, your belly may be too small to be showing your pregnancy. If you cannot schedule your pregnancy photography shoot during this period, ensure that the maternity photographer is kept abreast for you do not want to run out of time during this monumental time, which you want documented.

Prior to the pregnancy photography session, make sure you remove clothing, which contains elastic. Elastic leaves marks on your skin, which will most definitely show up in pictures. If you forget this fact do not worry, the maternity photographer will more than likely remind you of such before performing the maternity portraits.

Ensure that you and your maternity photographer discuss the overall style of pictures you want. Do you want to wear your clothes during the photo shoot? Do you want to show your skin on the photos? Is someone else going to be in the pregnancy photography session with you such as the father of your child or a beloved family member?

If you want someone else to be present in your pregnancy photography session, both of you must choose clothing that will not take away from the photo shoot. Keep in mind that your stomach with your unborn child cradled inside is the main subject of the photo shoot therefore, jewelry or bright objects should be left off until the photo shoot is over.

Discuss with your maternity photographer what you should wear during the photo shoot. Some women choose to pose topless or even naked. If you are uncomfortable with this, you can wear clothing that shows off your belly.

Keep in mind that these portraits are going to be pregnancy portraits so you are allowed to bring some items with you, which you have purchased, for your unborn child. These are very cute props, which can be added into the photo shoot. Most maternity photographers will have some items present at the photo shoot if you do not have your own items or if you merely forgot them.

During your baby portrait photography session, you will want to avoid placing lotions on your stomach before the maternity photographer begins the session. The lotions will cause light to bounce off your belly during the photo shoot but you can moisturize other parts of your body if you want to.

Your hands will be a focus of the photo shoot so make sure you give yourself a manicure or pay for a professional manicure. Do not forget your toes in preparing for this special day. Some items to remember to bring are brushes or combs as well as changes of clothes. Lip moisturizer will be a great addition to your face during the photo shoot.

Allot ample time for your pregnancy photography session. You do not want to rush the maternity photographer through the photo shoot. Most children photographers are use to taking their time with photo shoots. Performing these photo shoots are more times to none a one-time deal and cannot be re-shot. Congratulations and good luck to you, and your new child. Enjoy yourself while documenting this very important time in your life as well as your unborn child. If the maternity photographer performs a great job for you and your unborn child, he/she very well may become your maternity photographer as well as your family photographer.

It is fact that women are more prone to migraine than men. This female predisposition towards the disease has been the subject of several studies and it has been found that migraines are somehow connected to the shift in the levels of hormones in a woman's body, specifically the hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle. Within the ninth-month period of pregnancy, the amounts of these hormones inside the body fluctuate; thus, during these times, it is not uncommon for women to experience pregnancy migraine.

There are two typical forms of headaches that cause inconvenience for pregnant women. The first one is the tension headache that is characterized by a dull ache on both sides of the head and neck resulting from stress, fatigue, dehydration or allergies. This is the more common type which affects eighty percent of them. The remaining twenty percent experience pregnancy migraine, which is more painful and lasts longer. These migraines result from the dilation of brain arteries that put pressure on the nerves. This pressure, in turn, brings an intense, throbbing pain that can be debilitating. Aside from the pain, the woman might also experience nausea and vomiting, visual disturbances called aura, appetite loss and fatigue.

Most often, a pregnancy migraine will appear on the first trimester, decreasing in intensity and frequency for the remaining months. Shifts in the levels of bodily hormones, particularly estrogen, influence the frequency and severity of the migraines. It could reduce or increase them. Some experience their first migraine during pregnancy while those who have it prior to pregnancy notice lessening of migraine episodes.

Despite the pain associated with an attack, the migraine is not harmful to the baby being carried by its mother. However, it is important to seek professional medical advice for treatment. The primary reason for this is to make sure that the headaches are really manifestations of pregnancy migraine and not from any underlying illness which could be more serious.

In diagnosing and treating pregnancy migraine, the physician has to find the balance between providing the best relief while ascertaining that the fetus is not adversely affected. For this reason, the application of preventive measures is considered the best option. As much as possible, the use of medications should be avoided. Instead, natural treatments that do not involve drugs are to be employed. Examples of these are doing yoga and stretching exercises, deep breathing, massage and meditation. These techniques have been known to ease pain during pregnancy migraine attacks and to prevent stress. Resting in a dark room, cold compress and sleep likewise bring relief. Other measures can be observed to prevent attacks. Doing light exercises regularly bring great benefits. Trigger foods and substances such as chocolate, cheese, coffee and MSG are to be avoided. If medication is really needed, then acetaminophen can be prescribed. This drug is considered to be generally safe for women with pregnancy migraine.

During pregnancy, a woman finds joy in anticipating the birth of her baby but at the same time she has to cope with physical and emotional changes, which could be quite disturbing. Experiencing pregnancy migraine during this time may add to her anxiety. Fortunately, treatments are available that can still make this time of her life an exciting one.

Almost 30% of all births result in a c-section.

Most c-sections are planned due to medical conditions; some c-sections are even a choice women make in avoiding childbirth pain, however many occur in the wake of complications during labor, and these are the c-sections that catch moms off guard.

For a mom planning a vaginal birth it can be a mental shock to know that your birth expectations won't be met. Instead you'll be confronted with anesthesia, catheters, surgery, a longer hospital stay and a host of potential complications.

That's where planning becomes such an important component. Without it you are left with your doctor and hospital staff making decisions for you and that can leave you feeling out of control and emotionally compromised.

Whether you expect to have a c-section or not, planning is key.

Statistics show that women suffer a lesser degree of emotional stress and depression from having a c-section if they are prepared for the process, meaning they fully understand why their c-section is needed and take part in the decisions being made.

You may be thinking that it's easy to plan for something you expect to happen, but how do you plan for something you don't expect?

"Expect the unexpected", as they say and plan accordingly.

Planning for a surgical birth means understanding the risks, becoming familiar with the procedures, deciding on personal choices, familiarizing yourself with possible complications and being ready for how you will respond to them.

So how do you effectively prepare?

You've probably heard women say that they didn't feel their c-section was really necessary or that doctors are often too quick to perform c-sections due to convenience or avoidance of legal issues. This may or may not be true in many cases however, wouldn't you want to be sure that your c-section was the best choice for you?

The only way to effectively prepare is to understand why c-sections are performed and be aware of your options. You aren't going to be able to do this while flat on your back in labor. This is why keeping yourself informed, and having a plan for what may occur is so important. The last thing you want is your doctor or hospital staff making decisions for you. This is your body and your baby's birth; it should be as you would like it.

No matter how you expect the birth of your baby to go, take the time to go over possible complications, understand the choices and be ready emotionally and physically:

Here are a few of the items to think about when having a c-section. Give each of them some thought and work them into your birth plan:

Surgical Anesthesia

There are basically 3 types of anesthesia, spinal, epidural and General. Spinals and Epidurals are regional anesthesias which mean they numb a region of your body, in the case of a c-section the region is roughly from the waist down. Most c-sections use a spinal or epidural and you should have an idea for which one you would like.

The urinary catheter

You will be administered a catheter before surgery. Make sure it gets inserted after your anesthesia as inserting a catheter may 'smart' a bit.

Where does your baby go after the birth

Ask your doctor or the hospital about having your baby rest on your stomach after it's born. At this time the baby is often whisked away and never brought back until you are in recovery. Think about how you wish this to be and request it beforehand.

Discuss pain relief with your doctor

Being as pain free as possible is important to your recovery, it also helps get breastfeeding off to a good start. Your milk may be slow to come in so it's important to get the process going as soon as possible.

How do you envision your delivery to be?

Most hospitals will allow your partner with you in delivery but some hospitals will allow other family members as well. Check with your hospital and doctor to find out what their procedures are and plan according. Also don't forget to think about pictures and/or videos.

Your Recovery

Hospital recovery takes about 3-4 days. The first day or so you will be slow and tired, but stay focused on moving about as quickly as you can, and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

Keep in mind that your recovery at home may not be as easy as it was in the hospital. Make sure your home is set up for convenience before leaving for the hospital. Have childcare for older children taken care of, plan meals and household chores so that you are free to concentrate on other baby related things. Work in a modest exercise plan that keeps your energy up and get as much rest as possible while staying focused on yourself and your baby. as possible while staying focused on yourself and your baby.

Your C-section incision needs to be monitored regularly for the first few weeks, watching for any changes in its appearance.

There are some changes and conditions that are normal to see with your C-section incision, but other differences that could be signs of potential problems ahead. It is common to feel a large ridge or lump under the scar which is scar tissue forming underneath, this should reduce over time.

Another common concern many moms notice is the area often feels slightly numb and tight. These are all normal responses to the effects of the operation and should all gradually become less noticeable over the following weeks.

It is important to be very vigilant over your C-section incision scar because if it becomes infected, the healing process can take many weeks longer.

You should always call your doctor or midwife immediately if you notice any of the following: -

#1 Redness - the edges of a healing incision will normally appear slightly red, this is a natural reaction to the healing process. If the redness increases or starts to spread more than half an inch from around the wound then this could be a sign of something a little more sinister and you should contact your doctor or health advisor.

#2 Heat or excessive warmth on or around the wound. If your wound feels particularly hot compared to previous sensations and if this is accompanied by new pain or discomfort, then it be worth having it looked at.

#3 Any change or unusual appearance of the incision. Your C-section incision should gradually become less inflamed, smoother in appearance, less painful and more comfortable over the following weeks. In you notice any changes other than improvements, monitor them closely and if they continue or deteriorate any further then speak to your doctor.

#4 Any puss in the incision. If you suddenly notice a pussy discharge from your C-section incision after having a clean wound previously, or if the area starts to get mildly tender or painful, this could be a sign that it isn't knitting together very well and again you need to monitor the area closely and speak to your doctor if it continues for more than 24 - 48 hours.

If your C-section incision pulls apart and starts bleeding, apply an antibiotic cream, to keep any bacteria away from the wound. Do not apply any creams other than an antibiotic cream until your incision has completely healed. If you notice any bleeding, applying slight pressure to the wound may help to stop this. If the wound keeps bleeding after you apply pressure, call your doctor.

It important to stay vigilant and not obsessive over your C-section incision because any problems spotted early can reduce their severity over the long term. Don't panic over the slightest change, just monitor it and if you see further deterioration then contact your doctor or health care advisor.

Having a healthy pregnancy with diabetes can really be a dream to many, but it is possible and the purpose of this article is to establish the claim. Pregnancy period, otherwise known as gestational period, covers the growth of baby in the uterus from fertilization until birth. It also includes the conception and formulation of a plan or idea in the mind about the pregnancy. Gestational diabetes is defined as that discovered when you are pregnant. Getting pregnant by ignoring the gestational diabetes signs implies many additional increased risks like miscarriage, stillbirth and birth defects with your baby. However, if you pay constant care before conception, you can avoid many risks. Normal pregnancy reduces insulin sensitivity because of diabetogenic effects of placental hormones. This effect is maximal in the late second and third trimesters.

There are many cases of women with pre-acquired diabetes. With such condition, the mother should be cautious against the complications that may arise when she gets pregnant. This will reduce the risk of birth defects for babies. Also it will be safe for you if you are decided to control your pre-acquired diabetes as First Aid action before you get pregnant. With this awareness, you can prevent serious birth defects in the brain and spinal cord. Nowadays, most women of child bearing age can realistically expect motherhood for healthy children with intensive glycemic control.

Bad effects of pregnancy with diabetes: Being pregnant and diabetic can create problems to the mother and fetus. If you ignore the control of blood glucose in general, it may lead to menstrual problems and difficulty in conceiving. If you are pregnant, that condition itself worsens your diabetic control and causes certain complications to develop in your body. Maternal diabetes is also hazardous for the fetus with increased risk and major congenital malformations.

Plan yourself for healthy pregnancy: To prevent abortion and congenital malformations of diabetic mothers, awareness program and proper education should begin before conception. There are no specific contraceptive methods, but you can have treatment for your gestational diabetes. Whenever you achieve a stable sugar control, the contraception can be discounted and hence, you are safe to get pregnant. Gestational diabetes risks for the mother and the baby should be avoided at any cost. For this simple reason, you need not go a long way worrying with anxiety for healthy pregnancy.

Tips to have healthy pregnancy with diabetes:
• Careful blood glucose monitoring and proper treatment in advance can ensure you a healthy baby when you conceive.
• If you are taking oral medications, you need a switch over to insulin before and after pregnancy.
• If you are already a declared diabetic, you need to consult your doctor and plan accordingly for healthy pregnancy.
• Careful planning and preconception care alone can allow the diabetic woman to have a problem free and healthy pregnancy.
• Having gestational diabetes diet plan with multivitamin and folic acid can ensure you a healthy pregnancy.

Although most of us are incredibly happy having either a boy or girl, some couples secretly wish that they had the ability to choose the sex of their baby. There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to welcome either a baby girl or baby boy into your family. Contrary to what you may believe, it's not all up to Mother Nature when it comes to determining whether you'll give birth to a son or daughter. There are several things you can do to influence the gender of your baby.

<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-5995875220200776";
/* square no border */

Obviously timing is everything when it comes to conception. You need to ensure that you try for conception when the woman is ovulating. When it comes to trying to influence the gender of your baby, timing is even more crucial. Male and female sperm differ in the obvious ways and also some not so obvious ways. For instance, female sperm live longer, while male sperm are quicker. Therefore, when it comes to baby gender selection you should focus even more closely on timing. If you want a girl, making love a day or two before conception will increase your chances of having a daughter. If you have your heart set on welcoming a new son into your family, you'll want to try and conceive as close as possible to the moment of ovulation. Charting your monthly cycle will help you pinpoint exactly when ovulation is likely to occur.

Paying special attention to diet right around the time of expected conception is another way to influence the gender of your baby. A woman who wants to have a girl should be eating foods that are rich in potassium and sodium. Foods like bananas and nuts are great choices. It's somewhat different for those soon-to-be-moms who are hoping for a boy. They need to focus more on foods that have high levels of calcium and magnesium. Dairy products including low fat milk and yogurt should be included in the menu planning each and every day.

There are other specific methods that do work when it comes to choosing the gender of your baby.
Don't let nature decide the gender of your baby. If you have your heart set on a boy or girl, find out what you can do to ensure you get the little boy or girl you desperately want. There are proven ways to pick your baby's gender that are guaranteed to work
